Nigerians have dominated this year's Forbes Africa Person of the Year shortlist.
On Forbes Africa page of the US-based world's most famous business edition announced the shortlist for the 2013 Person of the Year Awards was published. The awards will take place in Nairobi, Kenya at the beginning of December this year.
An official voting is also open to the public who can make their selection of the individual they deem most worthy of the Person of the Year title.
The Person of the Year Awards celebrate 'the individual who, for better or worse, has had the most influence on events of the year gone by' and Forbes Africa has welcomed the participation of the public in what is fast becoming one of the most momentous and anticipated annual events in Africa.
"Every year, we are excited to decide the Forbes Africa Person of the Year. We want to honour the big hitters of the continent who are making a difference in people's lives and we hope that in doing so, it will inspire others," commented Chris Bishop, the managing editor of Forbes Africa magazine.

ASUU STRIKE: FG Talks With Vice Chancellors Fruitful
Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet today in a last ditch efforts to resolve the lingering crisis in the University System.
As a prelude to the meeting scheduled for 10.00a.m today, the Federal Government was locked in a meeting with the Vice Chancellors of the federal universities for about two hours on Monday. Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, who chaired the meeting held at the auditorium of the National Universities Commission (NUC), had said the meeting was a normal interaction with the vice chancellors and before the commencement of the meeting, excused journalists, personal assistants, his aides and all others, except the vice chancellors, ostensibly to prevent leakage of their deliberations.
Wike, after the closed door meeting declined comment to newsmen, but told journalists that the government would be meeting with the leadership of ASUU today.
However, it was gathered that the meeting was to see how the universities that have been shut for about four months now could be reopened to students as well as fine-tune discussion on the position of the government against the meeting with ASUU today.
It was gathered, on Monday, that the meeting today would afford the ASUU to report to the government about the position of the union on the offers by the Federal Government so far.
The fresh accord struck by the Vice-President Namadi Sambo with the union, government had agreed to increase the N30 billion already released for the payment of academic earned allowance to N40 billion.
Accordingly, vice chancellors were urged to expedite the disbursement within the shortest possible time using guiding templates that have been sent by the Committee of Vice Chancellors to them.
On the implementation of the Needs Assessment to Nigerian Universities report, it was stated that the government was cognisant and mindful of the ability of universities to effectively and efficiently utilise the N100 billion fund immediately, hence that figure.
Also, on project prioritisation, universities would now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be "rail-roaded" into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to be centralised.
Although, the President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, could not confirm the willingness of ASUU to attend today's meeting, it was gathered that zonal meetings of ASUU in their various universities were held last week to collate opinion of the members of the government offers.

17 year old Girl Commits Suicide After Parents Banned Her From Facebook
When I came across this story, I thought it was one of this over pampered American or British kids, so Indians are now following the west in this foolishness. According to the report, A teenager in India committed suicide after her parents banned her from using Facebook. Aishwarya Dahiwal, a 17-year-old second-year college student from Parbhani in the state of Maharashtra, was found dead on Thursday morning.
Dahiwal killed herself on Wednesday night following an argument with her parents about not paying attention to her schoolwork and using social media sites like Facebook.
"Like all parents, their intentions were only to ensure that the girl did not go astray,” said investigating officer G.H. Lemgude, according to NDTV. “They advised her to concentrate on her technical studies and stay away from long mobile chats and social networking sites.”
After the argument with her parents, Dahiwal retreated to her bedroom, where she wrote a suicide note and hanged herself.
"Is Facebook so bad? I cannot stay in a home with such restrictions, as I can't live without Facebook," her suicide note reads.
Her body was found Thursday morning.
Aishwarya’s father, Sunil Dahiwal, told India Real Time that his family was in a state of shock. “We still can’t believe it,” he said. “We are in deep shock. We just wanted her to focus on her studies. We never thought she would ever take such a harsh step.”
As India Real Time reports, there have been a rash of suicides in Maharashtra. Last year, 16,112 people killed themselves there, according to the National Crime Records Bureau. Tamil Nadu was the state with the most suicides last year, with 16,297. West Bengal had 14,957 suicides last year and Karnataka had 12,753.

UNBELIEVEABLE-I KIDNAPPED MY OWN SON TO RAISE MONEY FOR MY GIRLFRIEND
Wonder, they say will never end, just because your girlfriend needed money to open a salon, the next thing you could think of is to kidnap an innocent boy. I hope the boy will not grow up to hate you. According to reports, A 48-year-old man, yesterday, at the Lagos State command of the Department of State Services, DSS, gave a starling revelation of how he masterminded the kidnap of his nine-year-old son in Badagry area of Lagos.
The suspect, Adeyinka Adebayo, who admitted to have connived with his 28-year-old girlfriend, Kehinde Alonge, said he committed the act to generate money from his church members.
He added that the supposed ransom was to meet up with his girlfriend's demand.
Parading the suspect alongside his girlfriend before journalists, the Director, Lagos State Command, DSS, Mr. Victor Achu, explained that Adebayo had on October 3 reported at the command that his son had been kidnapped.
Achu said: "The command swung into action. Preliminary investigations confirmed the kidnap of the boy by one Kehinde Alonge, who demanded a ransom of N350,000 for his release and directed that the money be paid into a UBA account.
"The account was later discovered to be owned by one Taiwo Faloye. After series of tactical planning, the owner of the account and Kehinde were arrested at Ilesha, Osun State, while trying to withdraw the money."
Drama
A mild drama, however, unfolded following an argument between Adebayo and his girlfriend over who brought up the kidnap plan.
While Adebayo claimed that Kehinde hatched the plan to get the N200,000 she needed to open a hairdressing saloon, the later interrupted, stating that "he is lying. I was in Ilesha when he called me to come to Lagos that some people owed him money.
"He said the only way to collect the money from them was for me to come and take his son away, while he pretends that he had been kidnapped.
"I came to Lagos on October 4. I intended going to the school to pick the boy, but Adebayo advised I picked him from the house.
"Since the children knew me, I told the boy to follow me to get something outside and entered the next available vehicle to Ilesha, Osun State. His father even gave me N3,000 for transport.
"When we got to Ilesha, he sent another N3,750 worth of recharge cards for his feeding. He even called his son on phone daily. He was the one that asked me to demand N350,000.
"However, at the end of the bargain, he said I should accept N200,000. Since I had no bank account, I asked one of my relatives to give me his account details. But we were arrested at the point of withdrawal."
'She needed money'
However, Adebayo, a father of two, said: "My girlfriend said she needed money to open her own hair dressing saloon. Since I was not financially buoyant, I decided to raise money by masterminding my son's kidnap.
"I am a vulcanizer and business had not been booming. Anyone I approached for money usually declined to assist me.
"To get money from my church members in particular, I had to mastermind my son's kidnap.
"He spent nine days at my girlfriend's house. At the end of the day, I was able to raise N450,000 from my church members and friends, who earlier refused to help me.
"I regret my action because my son may never forgive me if he is told. I feel ashamed also because his mother has been down with stroke, though we are no longer married.
"I beg to be forgiven. It was the handiwork of the devil."
The suspects, according to Ochu, would be charged to court.

CHRIS BROWN GRANTED BAIL OF ASSAULT
Chris Brown granted bail, assault charge reduced from felony to Misdemeanour
Chris Brown catches another break! According to TMZ, he was released a few hours ago without bail and the assault charge has been reduced from a felony, which could have landed him in prison, to a misdemeanor. He's also required to stay 100 yards away from the man he allegedly punched in D.C yesterday.
Chris, who has been in custody since the incident, had been ordered to take a drug test, but the judge vacated that order. His bodyguard's charge was also reduced to a misdemeanor.

Just a few minutes ago, a cargo truck on the move collapsed in Maryland, Lagos.
The accident which saw the truck fall over to the other side of the road, hit a white Volvo family car.
Although the vehicle was completely destroyed, no casualties were recorded.
The roads are smeared with engine oil and fuel, and there is a little traffic.

President Jonathan however gave her the permission to travel ahead of the delegation 24 hours early under the guise that she would be signing the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Israel. As it turns out, the BASA agreement is not due for signing until October 29, following which Mr. Jonathan will depart for Nigeria.
Mrs. Oduah is also one of the ministers listed to follow the President to a meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas in the Occupied Palestinian territory, also on October 29.
Since arriving in Israel, Mr. Jonathan and several officials, including Mrs. Oduah, have occupied the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, and she has had direct access and regular meetings with the President.
Our reporters have seen her many times at meetings. An attempt by a student journalist to interview her was rebuffed as Mrs. Oduah claimed the student was a SaharaReporters journalist seeking to put her into more trouble.

In all, the Nigeria delegation in Israel is said to be over 800 officials, which means it is considerably larger than the delegates that travelled with Mr. Jonathan to the 68th United Nations General Assembly last month, as was reported by SaharaReporters.
Among them our reporters stated that there are at least 11 governors, 8 deputy governors and 14 Ministers.
The governors include Gabriel Suswam of Benue state, Godswill Akapbio of Akwa Ibom, Liyel Imoke of Cross Rivers, Martin Elechi of Ebonyi, Theodore Orji of Abia State, Peter Obi of Anambra, Jonah Jang of Plateau and Emmanuel uduaghan of Delta State. The Bayelsa State governor whose whereabouts has been mystery is expected to join the train later tonight.
In addition to Mrs. Oduah, the Ministers are Jumoke Akinjide, (minister of state for FCT), Godsday Orube (Niger Delta), Olubolade (Police Affairs), Nyeson Wike (Education), Labaran Maku (Minister of information), the minister of Trade and investment and Fiancnae minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala are also expected to join later.
It would be recalled that the presidency announcement of the visit by spokesman Reuben Abati last Tuesday listed only Senator Paulker; the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Akinwunmi Adesina; the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe; the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen; the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Prof Viola Onwuliri; and the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki as the officials accompanying President Jonathan.

As early as late last year, the act known as Sean Tizzle (Morihanfen Oluwaseun Oluwabamidele) was little known. However, he would go down in history as one of the music revelations of 2013.
Within a few months of the release of his single, Sho Lee, he has been transformed from nobody into one of Nigeria’s fastest rising music acts and now he says he is set to take the industry by storm.
In a recent interview he opens up about his successes and his private life.
“I faced a lot of challenges trying to get a record deal. Playing free gigs was a normal thing for me. Sometimes I even paid to perform in shows but I think it comes with the terrain. Even right now, I’m still facing lots of challenges. Though, there was no time I felt like walking away from music, the experience could be frustrating. There were times I was stranded and had to beg people for money on the streets just to make it to the studio for a recording.
“I remember the first time my record label, D Tunes called me up for a recording. I did not have a dime on me because I was stark broke. I had to beg for money on the road but nobody was willing to assist me,”
He talks about the success of his first single Sho Lee
“Sho Lee means it is hard in Yoruba and Ko lee means it’s not hard. The message is for all the sexy girls out there who are pretending and ‘forming’ to be what they are not. A lot of girls are not true to themselves. They think they are what they are not but at the end of the day, when you probe them, you discover that they are shallow.
