A source close to top guns in the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) has told icemoodent the lecturers will ditch their four month old strike this weekend so students could resume on November 18 (next Monday).
The source said there was no way the union could reject the new offer of N220bn a year tabled by President Goodluck Jonathan during a marathon meeting with ASUU last week Tuesday. ASUU had come out of that meeting to tell Nigerians it needed time to deliberate on the new deal and reach a consensus among it members before talking to the press. A top official of the union, has however said the government could not be trusted even on the new offer, and that ASUU’s members were divided over the government’s offer. He, however raised a beam of hope by saying the majority still decided to give the government the benefit of the doubt. As ASUU executives meet this Wednesday, if the fate of the strike is down to a vote among the striking lecturers, as suggested by ASUU chairman, Nasir Fagge, the four month old impasse may surely end this week. ASUU went on strike July 1 over the non-implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the government with a key component of the memorandum of understanding the allocation of 26% of Nigeria’s total budget to education. Although the government is planning to allocate just 9% of the 2014 budget to education, ASUU now seems set to end the strike after government offers that would surely boost lecturers’ take home pay and improve varsity infrastructure.

How AIT cameraman was ‘attacked by SSS officer’ at Obasanjo’s son’s wedding
According to reports, the AIT staff, Chineye Sunday was assaulted by an operative of the State Security Service (SSS) who was deployed to the Ebonyi State Government House in Abakaliki.
Mr. Sunday was trying to take photos of dignitaries at the event when he was allegedly pushed and punched by the SSS officer.

The event which was the traditional marriage ceremony of the former President of Nigeria, General ‘s son, and his wife, Chigozie Nwenyi at Okpuitumo, Ndufu Ikwo Development Centre of Ikwo LGA in Ebonyi State was almost ruined, if not for the display of comportment and maturity exhibited by the AIT cameraman during and after the attack on him.
Vanguard gathered that Mr. Sunday left the scene of the event with bruises, swollen face and a damaged camera worth over N1 million.
Narrating his ordeal, “The thing is that similar incident has happened before during a function and it was a National Assembly member, Hon. Tobias Okwuru that had to intervene in the matter.
After that incident, the next one was the one that happened at Ikwo during Chief Obasanjo’ son’s traditional marriage on Saturday.
Immediately I entered where dignitaries were and established my shots the guy (SSS operative) who was at my back pushed me. When that happened, I now started staggering with myself and my equipment.
“I went to the guy and asked him, why he did what he did; the next thing was for him to punch me close to my eyes. It was a terrible incident that happened before dignitaries and even before the ADC to the Governor and if it was possible the ADC would have beaten up the guy but he restrained himself.
“My camera that was damaged is worth over N1 million and I cannot use it again to cover any function for government or anybody else until it is repaired or a new one purchased for me,” he lamented.
Speaking with a cross section of journalists in the state, some of them expressed disappointment over the incident and called on the state government to deal decisively with the SSS personnel, if not they would never cover any event involving the Governor since their safety cannot be guaranteed.
“We are shocked, embarrassed and humiliated by this development. This SSS guys are fond of obstructing us from doing our job both in the Government House and at the Stadium; and the most annoying aspect of it is that they know us very well. We are all in the Government House. We are not strangers to them.
“We wonder who gave them the audacity to attack us. It is only in Ebonyi State we feel threatened to do our job. These guys need training and retraining; they shouldn’t vent their anger on us if their condition of service is not acceptable to them. They should allow us to do our job while they do theirs. Journalists world over are harmless persons”.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, South East Zone, Mr. Christopher Isiguzo who stated that he was yet to study the intricacies surrounding the case, condemned it entirely. He added that the zone would reach out to State Director of SSS with a view to ensuring that such development does not occur in future.
Meanwhile, the ADC to Ebonyi State Governor, Mohammed Tijan, Chief Security Officer, CSO, and Chief Detail appealed to Journalists in the state to express calm over the incident as the affected SSS operative would not escape any disciplinary measure.
However, effort made by Journalists in the State to get the attention of the SSS operative proved abortive as he did not want to discuss the matter.

A group of songwriters are accusing Usher of stealing his 2004 single ‘Caught Up’ from them.
TMZ reports that a group of songwriters, Zacharia Edwards, Mitch Moses and Vince McClean, are claiming the R&B icon stole his chart-topping Confessions single “Caught Up” from them.
They claim that they played it for an administrator at Arista Records (Usher’s label) in 2002, who then played it for LA Reid.
Two years later, they heard Usher’s version on the radio.
Just Blaze received the producer credit for the track, but his name hasn’t come up in the case so far.
Considering it’s been nearly a decade since the single dropped, the songwriters may not have the strongest case here.

Asuu to suspend strike action on or before friday-futmx lecturer
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, may call off its over four-months’ strike on Thursday, icemoodent has gathered.
It has been revealed that the Union’s plan is to suspend the strike after the National Executive Committee of the body meets on Wednesday night to deliberate over the outcome of the congresses held in over 50 universities across the country on the new offer extended to ASUU by the Federal Government.
The Union leadership had after its meeting with the Federal Government delegation last week promised to take President Jonathan’s message to all members and resolve on whether to call off the strike or not.
The ASUU leadership had since then briefed the zonal coordinators on the offer, and consequently directed the local branches to organise congress meetings between Friday last week and Tuesday (tomorrow) to deliberate on the new offer and make their final position known this week.
However, information gathered from the different Universities after their various congresses showed that the lecturers are now willing to call of the strike, even though they are unsure of government’s commitment to abide by the terms of the new agreement. Some of the lecturers that spoke with icemoodent yesterday have disclosed that the strike may be suspended this Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Adesola, has confirmed that the NEC meeting has been scheduled to hold on Wednesday. However, he did not disclose whether the strike would be called off after the meeting or not.
“Yes, the NEC will hold on Wednesday evening, but ASUU has a process which we are going to follow. NEC reserves the right to call off the strike after due consultation with members and this is why congresses are being called in all the chapters of the union. Please, wait till after the congress,” He has disclosed.
Sources have revealed to icemoodent that most of the lecturers have argued that the strike be called off, having seen the President’s commitment. They have said that the new agreement has been made public with the involvement of President Jonathan, hence the need to call off the strike. They have argued that such an agreement cannot be twisted even at the long run.

ASUU Consequences For Rejecting Government’s Recent Proposal
After getting an annual payment offer of N220 billion for the next five years, from the federal government, following a marathon meeting that ended Tuesday, indications have emerged that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may lose the sympathy of many and may make the government wield the big stick if it rejects the recent offer by the government, with a full blown implementation of the ‘no work, no pay’ policy likely to break the ranks of the union and cause disaffection among the members who would feel the pinch of their salaries being withheld.
The union had however, insisted that it wanted N350 billion in 2014 and N400 billion annually for the next four years.
A labour leader who was privy to the details of the meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Executives of ASUU told Thisday yesterday it would be in the best interest of the union to accept the proposal.
“Once you meet the president of a country, where else do you want to go? Who else do you want to meet with? The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) were present at that meeting. If we cannot find an exit, then we are in serious trouble.
“You cannot leave a strike open-ended, it will backfire seriously. If the government had started the ‘no work, no pay’ policy as soon as it was obvious that ASUU was bent on prolonging the strike, the strike would have been over by now. It would have broken the ranks of the members,” the source said.
The source added that although labour leaders are of the opinion that the government holds the major part of the blame for the strike, they (labour leaders) also think that ASUU has overdone it.
“If after all these, ASUU remains adamant, then it would be obvious that they have a political agenda. It may also be an ego thing for ASUU NEC who realise that ASUU has been known to be a union that strives on holding governments to ransom,” the source added.
Sources say the meeting of ASUU’s NEC will hold in the next one week.

Thankfully, there's a new Windows utility that makes rooting a one-click affair: Kingo Android Root. It's free, and based on my initial tests with a Virgin Mobile Supreme, it works like a charm. (Be sure to check the compatibility list before you proceed, keeping in mind that although the Supreme wasn't on it, the utility had no problem with it.) Here's how to get started.
Step one: Download and install Kingo Android Root.
Step two: Enable USB debugging mode on your phone. If it's running Android 4.0 or 4.1, tap Settings, Developer Options, then tick the box for "USB debugging." (You may need to switch "Developer options" to On before you can do so.) On Android 4.2 and later, tap Settings, About Phone, Developer Options, and then tick USB debugging." Then tap OK to approve the setting change.
Step three: Run Android Root on your PC, then connect your phone via its USB sync cable. After a moment, the former should show a connection to the latter.
Step four: Click Root, then sit back and wait while the utility does its thing. The aforementioned Supreme took all of about two minutes, including the automated reboot at the end.

Jonathan comes from the group of labourers and slaves, those who naturally do not have the mental capacity to rule and therefore should be ruled.
The problems are many to be enumerated. Some Nigerians have through one means or the other expressed that the country is rapidly veering towards a dangerous direction. In fact, some tribes and ethnic groups have threatened to pull out of the Nigerian nation if a forum is not created for Nigerians to sit down together and discuss the way forward. Fortunately, the president has hearkened to the urgency of the situation by calling for the convocation of a national conference. Since this was announced by the president on the 1st of October, it has been reported that the different tribes and ethnic groups in the country have all gone to work to articulate their points and appoint their representatives for the conference.
It is in this light that the umbrella association of Igbo unions, Ohaneze, recommended that representations in the proposed national conference be on equality of the different tribes or ethnic groups in the country. To the amazement of so many people, this recommendation did not go down well with the members of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) who immediately made their stance known through their National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani. According to Sani, “someone needs to inform Ohaneze that its recommendations that representations in the national dialogue should be on equality does a lot of violence to definition of injustice by Aristotle who said injustice is not only when equals are treated unequally but is also injustice when unequals are treated equally. One wonders the justification in making the representations by Ibos (sic) and Idoma of Benue state to be on equality, or that of South East and North West to be on equal basis.”
Reactions have trailed that vehement stance of the ACF. So many people cannot understand why the ACF are always averse to any call for a national dialogue especially at a time like this. But one only needs to look deeper in order to discover what Arewa are really talking about. Sani did not quote Aristotle just to showcase how educated he is. No. He rather let other Nigerians confirm the theory that has all the while been the substratum of all Arewa political strivings in Nigeria. This theory, unfortunately, Arewa found in Aristotle.
For Aristotle, the notion of natural inequality is central to the conception of humanity, with a view to both individual and communal living. Natural inequality forms the basis for not only establishing partnership in the society but also the highest form of partnership. In fact, for the life of the society to be lived well, inequality must be seen as an undisputed ingredient. But how did Aristotle arrive at this position? Aristotle started by stating that the state is a natural institution which arose from natural associations among people, basically from man and woman, the agents of procreation. From these agents, the family emerged, whose major function is the provision of the daily needs.
The coming together of families brought about the emergence of the village whose importance transcends the provision of daily needs. The coming together of villages in turn brought about the emergence of the state which for Aristotle is most perfect and most varied. (When Aristotle said that the human person is a political animal, we understand him from here). The state was seen as been prior to the individual though not in the order of nature but rather in the order of becoming. This is what brought about the necessity of everyone to submit to the state and its hierarchy just as a wife naturally submits to the husband, the child to the parents, and the slave to the master.
Now, in this state, Aristotle further stated that slavery was natural. He came about this by observing that slaves invariably were strong and large, and therefore concluded that slavery was a product of nature. For him, some persons are by nature free while others are by the same nature slaves. We can, from here, begin to understand the position of Arewa as they go about preaching their message of inequality in Nigeria. Aristotle went on to state that for one to qualify as a citizen of the state, the person must have the ability to take his or her share in ruling and being ruled. Since this citizen would be expected to sit in the assembly and the law courts, such a person would have ample time as well as showcase appropriate temperament and character. It is on this basis that Aristotle concluded that such persons as labourers and slaves could not be said to be citizens since they had neither time nor the appropriate mental development and character to administer the political process in the state.
Therefore, for Aristotle, it is simply necessary that some should rule and others be ruled since from the hour of their birth, some are penciled down for subjugation while others are made to rule.We do not need to task ourselves much to reconcile this Aristotelian position (which Arewa have tenaciously held on to) and the Arewa political slogan ‘Born To Rule.’ Arewa have, from the beginning, marked themselves out as the group of rulers while regarding others as the group of labourers and slaves. Do we need to consult any oracle to know that the only thing Arewa are after in Nigeria is the presidency? Arewa have found it very difficult to recognize Goodluck Jonathan as the president of Nigeria because for them,

It should be noted that Arewa started all this scheming right from the creation of states in Nigeria. People should no longer ask why the northern part of Nigeria was divided into 19 states (Abuja inclusive) while the southern part could only be found worthy to have 17 states.Truly, Arewa know what they are doing. The only thing they do not know is that that Aristotelian theory they have vehemently subscribed to has remained Aristotle’s weakest piece of thought and also the most criticized.

NEW OFFER“Nigerians should be patient for ASUU to finish their meetings and come out with a message to Nigerians.”
A new wave of optimism has arisen after yesterday’s meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The meeting, which reportedly lasted 13 hours, ended with the President of the academic body, Nasir Isa Fagge, saying that the members of ASUU would deliberate on the new offer made by the government.
This can be seen as a sign of progress as all the previous meetings have ended up deadlocked. Dr. Fagge however declined to make any comments as he insisted that the entire membership of ASUU would decide on whether to take the offer or not.
The Nation Newspaper reports:
Speaking with State House correspondents, he said that the meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan discussed how to tackle the problem of University education system in the country.
He said: “Well we have had lengthy meeting with Mr. President, rubbing minds on how best to address the problem of University education in this country.”
“And we now have a message from Mr. President we are going to take to our members. And we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to the message of Mr. President.”
On whether the lecturers are going back to the classroom, he said: “That is up to our members.” Asked what the message was, he said: “I can’t tell you. Its not for you. It is for our members.” If impressed with the message, he said: “Don’t put words into my mouth. Our members will determine that.”
Also speaking with journalists at the end of the meeting, the Minister of Labour Emeka Wogu said: “We made progress, the President of ASUU told you that they are going back with a message from the Federal Government back to their members. And the message is full of high expectations and hope.”
On whether the strike will be called off, he said: “That is why the message is full of high expectations and hope. So our prayers is that they come back with positive outcome. They might not even come back to meet us, they might take decisions there that will meet your expectations.”
“Nigerians should be patient for ASUU to finish their meetings and come out with a message to Nigerians.”
Responding to whether the Federal Government made a fresh offer, her said: “Well, the offer we made are the offer they are taking in line with the 2009 agreement. The issues that led to the strike are issues contained in the 2009 agreement and we did not go beyond the agreement.”

The meeting with the President which kicked off at about 2:30pm had in attendance, President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, as well as Minister of Education and Labour, Nyesom Wike and Emeka Wogu.
The ASUU delegation comprised National President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Fagge and other executives of the union.
President of Nigerian Labour Congress, Mallam Abdulwaheed Omar was also in attendance.
While exchanging pleasantries with the ASUU delegation, President Jonathan said: “I hope this strike will end today. Our children have suffered enough. We must find a solution.”
Earlier, at the end of their meeting, both ASUU and the Senate President did not agree to call off the strike after the union had presented its position before Senator Mark, although the union expressed optimism that the intervention of the Senate might bring a lasting solution to the crisis.

Speaking in an interview after a closed-door session with the Senate, ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge said the meeting was convened at the instance of the Senate and that after presenting their position, the union was waiting for the Senate’s reaction to their position.
When asked whether the closed door meeting was conclusive, Dr. Fagge whose answer was in the negative, however, said that the intervention by the Senate President was a welcome development to get the crisis sorted out for the universities to be re-opened and that the union was waiting for the outcome.
Senate President, David Mark said: “As you are aware, I have been mandated by the Senate to meet with you and the Federal Government to resolve this crisis as soon as possible so that the children will go back to the classrooms and I believe that is what you also want.
“So we are on the same wave length, just a matter of approach to get it right. I sympathise with your cause and I believe whatever can be done for you to go back to your work should be done and as quickly as possible.
“I think this is long overdue for us to sort out. So, the intervention as you may know, the Senate mandated me to talk to both ASUU and talk with Mr. President and that is precisely what am doing.
“At the end of the day, it is not how long we dragged this matter that is important but how soon we sort it out. We will sort it out so that there will be no winner, no loser.
“It is not a matter of ego, it is not a matter of who has an upper hand or who has won in this dispute. National interest is what is at stake. Our students have been out of classrooms for four months now and that is not in the best interest of anybody.
“We are not happy about it, the parents are not happy and the government is not happy. So if something is going on and we are not happy about it the proper thing is to have it resolved as quickly as possible.”
ASUU President, Dr. Fagge said, “Members of ASUU are not just lecturers. We are also parents and also among us we have students who are pursuing post-graduate degrees so this strike directly affects us negatively.”

The meeting with the President which kicked off at about 2:30pm had in attendance, President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, as well as Minister of Education and Labour, Nyesom Wike and Emeka Wogu.
The ASUU delegation comprised National President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Fagge and other executives of the union.
President of Nigerian Labour Congress, Mallam Abdulwaheed Omar was also in attendance.
While exchanging pleasantries with the ASUU delegation, President Jonathan said: “I hope this strike will end today. Our children have suffered enough. We must find a solution.”
Earlier, at the end of their meeting, both ASUU and the Senate President did not agree to call off the strike after the union had presented its position before Senator Mark, although the union expressed optimism that the intervention of the Senate might bring a lasting solution to the crisis.

Speaking in an interview after a closed-door session with the Senate, ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge said the meeting was convened at the instance of the Senate and that after presenting their position, the union was waiting for the Senate’s reaction to their position.
When asked whether the closed door meeting was conclusive, Dr. Fagge whose answer was in the negative, however, said that the intervention by the Senate President was a welcome development to get the crisis sorted out for the universities to be re-opened and that the union was waiting for the outcome.
Senate President, David Mark said: “As you are aware, I have been mandated by the Senate to meet with you and the Federal Government to resolve this crisis as soon as possible so that the children will go back to the classrooms and I believe that is what you also want.
“So we are on the same wave length, just a matter of approach to get it right. I sympathise with your cause and I believe whatever can be done for you to go back to your work should be done and as quickly as possible.
“I think this is long overdue for us to sort out. So, the intervention as you may know, the Senate mandated me to talk to both ASUU and talk with Mr. President and that is precisely what am doing.
“At the end of the day, it is not how long we dragged this matter that is important but how soon we sort it out. We will sort it out so that there will be no winner, no loser.
“It is not a matter of ego, it is not a matter of who has an upper hand or who has won in this dispute. National interest is what is at stake. Our students have been out of classrooms for four months now and that is not in the best interest of anybody.
“We are not happy about it, the parents are not happy and the government is not happy. So if something is going on and we are not happy about it the proper thing is to have it resolved as quickly as possible.”
ASUU President, Dr. Fagge said, “Members of ASUU are not just lecturers. We are also parents and also among us we have students who are pursuing post-graduate degrees so this strike directly affects us negatively.”
